The EQ Leader

The EQ Leader Assessment and Training program is a best-in-class emotional intelligence education program so leaders understand their own EQ competencies, set goals for professional and personal development, and apply their EQ strengths for personal and team effectiveness.  The program supports organizations to become more effective by increasing the people-side of leadership.

Program Design:

This engaging program introduces participants to applications of emotional intelligence (EQ) for enhancing leadership and team performance.  Delivering a powerfully effective model of emotional intelligence, participants increase self-awareness and recognize emotional intelligence needs and assets in team performance, and develop key skills for increasing people-performance.

Participants get answers to key questions:

  1. What is emotional intelligence?
  2. What are the business results of utilizing emotional intelligence?
  3. What are my own EQ strengths?
  4. How do I gain more of the benefits for my team and myself?
  5. What are my next steps to leverage my EQ strengths to improve leadership

Program Components:

Assessment:

Participants will complete the Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence Assessment (SEI) online.  The SEI is a statistically valid self-report assessment focused on developing and applying EQ; it is the only measure based on the Six Seconds model and had been validated on three continents.

The detailed report provides insight into current performance and a roadmap for development.  It can be used in coaching, development planning, personal growth, hiring, selection, and for training.  It is effective as a pre-post measure to show improvements.  The SEI is web-enabled and takes 20-30 minutes to complete.  It is completely confidential.

SEI scores predict important work and life outcomes, including Effectiveness, Relationship Quality, Quality of Life, and Health. For more information, visit www.6seconds.org/sei/

Training:

A Six Seconds Certified trainer will provide the 1-day workshop on Leading with Emotional Intelligence.

The 1-day course offers new insights and simple, practical tools.  Topics include:

  • The EQ Leader – learn how emotional intelligence is a critical component to breakthrough leadership.
  • Know Yourself: Patterns – understand your own behavior and reactions and learn a powerful tool for increasing personal mastery.
  • Know Yourself: Emotional Literacy – decode the hidden language of emotions and learn how to access the wisdom contained in them.
  • Choose Yourself: Navigate Emotions – see how to manage emotions on a deep level.
  • Choose Yourself: Optimism – increase your personal energy and effectiveness.
  • Give Yourself: Empathy – learn how to truly listen.
  • Give Yourself: Noble Goals – connect with your deep sense of purpose in order to make more effective decisions and communicate them in a way that is compelling.
  • Into Action – develop a plan for next steps.

Coaching:

Following the training, each participant will have a one-to-one telephone coaching session to debrief their assessment leading to an individual action plan. This is a critical step to developing and applying EQ competencies.  Participants may elect for follow-up coaching.

Recommended Additions

Follow Up Coaching :

The quality of any training program is improved if there is an opportunity for participants to practice the skills and be held accountable to their commitments. Coaching is the vehicle that ensures that your investment in this program will show up in bottom-line results. We recommend a minimum of 3 coaching sessions to help participants sustain the learning and transfer the classroom experience into real-world change.

If coaching for all participants in not in the budget, either participants can work in “pods” (small groups) or the team leaders can receive the coaching to support follow-through of other team members.

Post Assessment:

After 90 days participants re-take the SEI Assessment; this provides additional accountability for participants and a focus for their development process. The Comparison Group Report analyzes the pre-training and post-training scores to demonstrate ROI.  Often clients follow the post-assessment with a team teleclass to review changes and define next steps.

Course Logistics:

Audience: Ideal for middle and senior managers, both experienced leaders and new managers will find this program valuable.

Length: one-hour pre-course e-learning followed by eight hours on site (can be divided into two or four modules), plus at least one 1:1 coaching call.

Rationale:

The Harvard Business Review calls emotional intelligence a “revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea” — their 1995 article on the subject is their most requested reprint in history.  Business leaders are seeing how the hard science of this breakthrough approach improves leadership and performance in teamwork, customer service, and retention, a detailed business case is available from Six Seconds (www.sixseconds.com).  Being “emotionally intelligent” means using emotional data effectively – and research shows this blending of thinking plus feeling drives effective decision-making, engagement, and superior collaboration.

This approach is research-based, time-tested, and proven effective. This program’s learning technology comes from a curriculum called “Self-Science,” identified in Daniel Goleman’s 1995 best-selling book, Emotional Intelligence, as one of two models for teaching EQ.  In a recent course evaluation, participants rated the program 9.35 out of 10 on, “The program helps you raise performance at work.”

Certification

The EQ Leader Cert Train-the-Trainer program supports internal and external trainers to deliver the 1-day introduction. Complete trainer kit is available with Certification.  A recommended application is for operational leaders to be certified and deliver the program in collaboration with learning & development staff.
