At the Heart of Leadership: Engaging Superior Performance With and Through People

“Emotional Intelligence is a breakthrough competency.” – Harvard Business Review

If you’re a current or an aspiring leader in business, government, healthcare, military, or education and searching for the one ingredient that will distinguish your management and leadership effectiveness and performance, emotional intelligence is it!

With the Heart of Leadership program, you’ll optimize your leadership with new insights and simple, practical tools to:

Inspire and motivate employees to engage fully, work smarter and more effectively.

Understand yourself and others to increase influence, trust, communication, and accountability.

Strengthen relationships and the workplace climate to build enduring loyalty.

Remain at your best, physically, emotionally and cognitively to tap more of your leadership capacity.

Program Components:

Assessment:

Participants will complete the Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence Assessment (SEI) online.  The SEI is a statistically valid self-report assessment focused on developing and applying EQ; it is the only measure based on the Six Seconds model and had been validated on three continents.

The detailed report provides insight into current performance and a roadmap for development.  It can be used in coaching, development planning, personal growth, hiring, selection, and for training.  It is effective as a pre-post measure to show improvements.  The SEI is web-enabled and takes 20-30 minutes to complete.  It is completely confidential.

SEI scores predict important work and life outcomes, including Effectiveness, Relationship Quality, Quality of Life, and Health. For more information, visit www.6seconds.org/sei/

Training:

A Six Seconds Certified trainer will provide the 2-day leadership training.  Topics include:

  • EQ Leadership: Introduction to the EQ competencies that make the difference for great leaders.
  • Know Yourself: Increase self awareness and your ability to decode the hidden language of emotions.
  • Choose Yourself: Increase your ability to assess your options, follow your intentions to walk the talk.
  • Give Yourself: Unlock your full capacity to engage, influence, and inspire others by enhancing empathy and connecting with your deep sense of purpose.
Coaching EQ: Apply the EQ model to understand and manage the levers that drive performance.
  • Case Studies: Practice the EQ concepts and tools on real management and leadership challenges.
  • Into Practice: Develop a tactical implementation plan.

Coaching:

Following the training, each participant will have 3 one-to-one telephone coaching sessions to debrief their assessment leading to an individual action plan. This is a critical step to developing and applying EQ competencies.  Participants may elect for follow-up coaching.  Coaching is the vehicle that ensures that your investment in this program will show up in bottom-line results; it allows participants sustain the learning and transfer the classroom experience into real-world change.

Recommended Additions

Leadership Team Coaching :

When the program is delivered to a larger team, additional coaching for the team leaders is recommended.  This team coaching focuses on how to leverage the new awareness into the day-to-day operations.

Post Assessment:

After 90 days participants re-take the SEI Assessment; this provides additional accountability for participants and a focus for their development process. The Comparison Group Report analyzes the pre-training and post-training scores to demonstrate ROI.  Often clients follow the post-assessment with a team teleclass to review changes and define next steps.

Program Logistics:

Audience: Ideal for upper and senior managers; especially experienced leaders ready to “step up” as people-leaders.  The program is also suitable for high potential leaders moving into corporate leadership roles.

Scope:

  1. Four-hour pre-course e-learning
  2. Online assessment
  3. 1:1 debrief of assessment results by phone (20 min)
  4. 16 hours of dynamic in-person learning (two days, can be divided into four 1/2-day sessions)
  5. Three 1:1 coaching calls to turn learning into action accompanied by practical assignments, reading, and application of practical tools.

Rationale:

Most managers have a high level of expertise on the technical side of their work, but few have substantial training in the human side of the job. In an era of rapid change and complex organizations, it takes a robust set of people skills to create performance.

The Heart of Leadership is an engaging two-day program where you’ll experience a unique approach to learning that’s been effective for hundreds of professionals from six continents. The methodology comes from a curriculum called “Self-Science,” identified in Daniel Goleman’s 1995 best-selling book, Emotional Intelligence, as one of two models for teaching EQ. This approach is research-based, time-tested, and proven effective. In a recent course evaluation, participants rated the program 9.35 out of 10 on, “The program helps you raise performance at work.”

Emotional intelligence provides powerful insights and tools for improving human performance. Emotional intelligence (or “EQ”) is the capacity to effectively use emotions, and it’s a key differentiating factor of successful leaders. Why? Because relationships are at the heart of workplace performance, and EQ skills are what makes effective relationships thrive. As Andrea Jung, Chair and CEO of Avon Products, says “emotional intelligence is in our DNA here at Avon because relationships are critical at every stage of our business.”

Program Features and benefits:
